Understanding Global Barcode Standards

EAN-13 or UPC barcodes:

The standard dimensions for an EAN-13 or UPC barcode are 37mm in width and 25mm in height.

The minimum recommended size for these barcodes is 80% of the standard size, approximately 30mm wide by 20mm high, including a 3mm "quiet zone" (empty space) on both sides of the barcode.

ITF-14 Carton Codes:

The standard dimensions for ITF-14 Carton Codes are roughly 122mm wide and 32mm in bar height, with 10mm quiet zones on either side.

For General Distribution Scanning, the ITF-14 Barcode Symbol's magnification should range between 50% and 100%. For other scanning environments, it can vary from 25% to 100%. If you're printing on corrugated fiberboard, the ITF-14 should be at least 62.5%.

The bar height for General Distribution Scanning should be no less than 32mm. In other scanning scenarios, aim for the tallest possible bar height, with a minimum of 13mm.

QR Codes:

QR Codes lack strict sizing requirements. The necessary space depends on the encoded data volume and scanning distance.

A practical minimum size for QR codes is 2 cm by 2 cm (0.8 inches by 0.8 inches) for close-range scanning, excluding the quiet zone.

Optimal QR code size varies based on factors like packaging space, scanning conditions, print quality, and print resolution. If the QR code is too small, it may not be scannable or might be hard to print clearly. Conversely, overly large QR codes can be challenging to scan up close or print at the needed quality.

Barcode Colours

Barcode scanners read black or cool colours (blue, green) and ignore white or warm colours (red, orange, yellow). Hence, barcodes should be printed in black or cool colours, and the background should be white or warm colours. Reflective surfaces or metallic colours are problematic for scanning.

Barcode Position

EAN-13 and UPC barcodes are typically aligned horizontally. For curved surfaces like bottles, rotate the barcode 90 degrees to vertical. Avoid placing the barcode near edges; position it on a flat surface with ample blank space (at least 3mm) around the barcode bars.
